I’ve heard mention of this little place called “Back in the Day Cafe” several times recently. Friends, family, and Facebook had been letting me know that this was a place to try. When I opened up our coupon mailer and saw a $5 off coupon, I figured it meant that the time had come. I set up a lunch date with some family, and we headed into Cary to check it out.
Back in the Day Cafe is nestled in a little shopping center in Cary right on Kildaire Farm Rd. Tucked away in the corner, with outside seating available, is a little diner style cafe. There definitely weren’t too many people there on a weekday afternoon, so getting a table was not a problem. I don’t think this is always the case though. They have different events (drink specials, guest bands and DJs, cornhole tournaments, etc.) that I’m sure fill the place up. You can check out their calendar to see what’s coming up.
The fast and friendly greeting was impressive and a plus as we sat down. They didn’t even seem scared that I had two small children with me. The inside is decorated with tons of “vintage” gear that might make you feel a little old. You know, if seeing a TV in a place with a “back in the day” decor matches the one you grew up with…
The wait staff had helpful tips and input on the menu which is something I really appreciate. We all found something that sounded great and I was EXTREMELY excited about the kids’ options. Kids 0-5 can eat for just 99 cents! That doesn’t include drinks, but man! A hot dog and applesauce for less than a buck?!? Awesome! Kids 5-10 were still a great deal and also came with fries, but I honestly can’t remember the exact price point.
While we were waiting for our food, we brought some toys to the table. There are some Mega Bloks, books, random games, and of course an old school Atari (that a girl was actually playing while we were there) and an old school Nintendo that I can only hope really works. (You might have to blow into the game catridge though. ;))
Once our meals arrived, we dug in and were checked on regularly. The food was good. It was diner style food and not necessarily fancy, but everything we got was cooked fresh and tasted good. The prices here are fair and the place is clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would definintely come back here… and next time it might be without my kids for some drink specials and trivia!
