Have you heard of the Capital City Clauses? I’m not sure what pops into your head when you hear the name, but I picture jolly elves runnng around Downtown Raleigh spreading holiday cheer along with plenty of southern charm. To be honest, that’s not far from the truth! The Capital City Clauses are a local nonprofit that leads one of the largest local toy drives in our area. I had the chance to talk with Tim Lehan, the current president of the Capital City Clauses Board. He gave some special behind the scenes insight and tips for how you can get involved.
By teaming up with The Salvation Army, Capital City Clauses provide thousands of toys to Wake County children each year. This partnership was started back in 1993 and has had tremendous success. So much so, that the program is now reaching beyond the Wake County borders into our neighboring communities. Here’s how it works. The Capital City Clauses organize a few major events every year (The Jingle Ball, Stock the Sleigh, Jingle in July). These combined with running tons of local toy drives, produce some incredible results. These toys are then given to The Salvation Army who knows how to get toys into the hands of those who need them in time to make magical holidays for families in our very own community.
There are so many ways you can get involved. Right now, you can donate toys to one of their local toy drives. If you are unsure of where one is, you can contact the Clauses to find out.
You can also head on out to a party tomorrow night (Decemeber 9, 2014)! I know that might rule out some of you who have to plan ahead for babysitters but for those a little more footloose and fancy free, you should DEFINITELY head out to The Jingle Ball. This is kind of the big kahuna of The Capital City Clauses year. This is the event that got it all started and, just like everything this group does, is getting bigger and better every year. This year the ball will be held at Marbles from 6:30 – 10:30. Tickets are not required, but you do need a toy donation with a value of $20 or more to get in. The VIP tickets are sold out, but last I checked, they still had some Jingle Jump Passes which allow you to skip the line. Eat, drink, dance, be merry, and spread some Christmas cheer.
My favorite event is also just days away. On Friday December 12, WNCN and Capital City Clauses will partner up to host Stock the Sled. Bring new toys to the Brier Creek Walmart or the Durham Walmart in New Hope Commons and help fill the sled up for those in need. WNCN will be doing live broadcasts from both locations throughout the day with visits from Melanie Sanders and cheif meterologist Wes Hohenstein. I absolutely LOVE seeing the toys pile up. It really does warm my heart to see how much people are willing to give to complete strangers just to keep the magic of Christmas alive.
All of these toys are organized and made into a “store” so families in need, selected by The Salvation Army can come and shop for a gift for their children. Shopping day is actually another event that The Salvation Army organizes and all of the Capital City Clauses look forward to. Tim Lehan actually say “Distribution Day” is his favorite event of the year. “The whole year builds to this moment and it is such a fantastic atmosphere…These are our neighbors we’re helping and it’s always amazing to see community come together so nicely.”
